To understand children

*

Childhood serves

a purpose.

It isn’t something to

“get through” or speed up.

It’s there to protect

developing minds.

To nurture young souls.

So let’s give our kids

the space to be unbusy.

Let’s unschedule.

Let’s “miss out.”

Let’s hold the space

for childhood.

Because childhood

isn’t a dress rehearsal

for adulthood.

    How true…
There seems to be much pressure on the doing with children at present and while its great to learn and grow there’s also time needed to learn to be ok with themselves, get bored even. Make time to hang about and create things out of ones imagination. I see it in my grandkids.

Yes. But I also feel bad for parents charged with trying to teach kids to negotiate this largely impossible world, who fall into the understandable habit of examining their current behaviors for signs they will somehow get them into trouble with somebody someday. And so I think it often falls to us, the grandparents, to be the ones who can accept those kids unconditionally and to embrace who they are right now.

Indeed Steve, I have found that my role as grandparent is to be a different voice. One that does meet my grandsons as they are, without expectations of them. To be with them in the now has enabled me to build a trust so that they feel able to tell me things and be heard. Its a wonderful thing to be able to offer this…being in the background and on their side in a world that is confusing….
